 The night seemed to never arrive. Some years there were predictions of snow flurries. If we were really lucky, the evening temperatures would reach a balmy 56 degrees, warm enough to NOT wear snow boots, a scarf, and gloves. We lived in row houses, which nowadays are considered Town Houses and are on the market for a mere $300,000 when in fact our parents spent a mere $8000 back in the day. The big advantage of living in a row was that kids could Trick or Treat without having to climb a whole lot of stairs. Our street was kid-friendly except for two neighbors who either turned out every light in their house or had the audacity to place a sign saying STAY AWAY! Our block had way too many kids for anyone of us to FORGET, how UN-HALLOWEEN APPROPRIATE, those two families had been! We then piled into Aunt Ruthie's car, all 8 of us, two moms, and six kids, and drove to Beechwood Boulevard, a street where Halloween Dreams were made because THOSE homes gave away hot dogs, packets of dimes, and candied apples. BUT all good things had to come to an end, and the unofficial return home time was 9:00 pm. All unwrapped candy was thrown away, and regular apples thrown out, and all other goodies placed in separate bags with each of our names on them and stapled shut. Pittsburgh Halloween in the 1980’s Trick Or Treating began about 5pm, no need to wait till the spooky dark shadows of the night; nope lots of other worries in the ’80s, so the early monster got the goodies, and the witching hour ended about 7pm. Even more scrutiny of the Treats, a lecture ahead of time of not eating anything until mom or dad inspected it, and a reminder to always say thank you. Somehow the weather behaved a whole lot better in the ’80s in Pittsburgh, in October, so chances of bundling up and hiding your costume were few and far in-between!

 

West Hollywood Halloween Street Festival, crazy and chaotic, all happening after midnight, and mostly all of adults. The most meticulous of costumes, the talent of creatives, and the truly bizarre concepts are all on display. Of course, West Hollywood has a large population of LGBTQ folks so the Kill The Gay, Gays Will Go To Hell, Jesus Hates Gays contingency of homophobes all showed up dressed as BIGOTS. (These were the usual men and women who somehow always showed up to protest anything Gay, having one wonder, how much in denial of their own sexuality they must have been, poor deniers!)

 

And of course, what would Halloween be, if not a SCARY MOON, with ominous clouds almost playing peek-a-boo. The HOUSE used as the original set for the first American Horror Story, an unnerving interior of a HAUNTED HOTEL. Those were the days, then and now. The best thing about Halloween was that once it was November 1, all the ghosts and goblins disappeared, safety, security, and back to the simple life. Nowadays, the FRIGHT remains, something called AMERICAN POLITICS AND AMERICAN POLITICIANS!

I do not know who Tim Thornell is, or was, or will be, but I read his tale of COVID concern, and suddenly got very pissed off, and actually never want to meet this guy…EVER! For me, Tim Thornell is a real enigma. It seems he understands the value of medicine, in this case, the Vaccine for Covid. It seems he grasps the very controllable loss of life from stupid people acting too stupid for their own good, let alone their own life. But then, SOMEHOW, the fallacy that personal freedoms are at risk, when those who claim personal freedoms, place the rest of us at RISK, just DOES NOT RESONATE, REASON, or seems RELEVANT. The awful thing for me, in reading about some stranger, is that he seems smart enough to do the right thing, but DESPITE all of that he acquiesces to the sheer conspiracy theories of men and women who seem to be happy planning the pre-meditated murders of not only other strangers but members of their own families.

I will admit, I oftentimes have no idea how the legal system of this nation works. Especially during the FOUR ARDUOUS and DANGEROUS years of the Putin/Trump Administration in which my expectations of Justice, The Law, Bad Guys and Gals, and Bad Intentions and Consequences for Illegal Activity had grown dour and dismal, to say the least. Each day provides the worst insights of the previous past, and sometimes the promise of a better tomorrow. The topsy-turvy roller-coaster ride causes me to feel nauseous, nervous, and neurotic as it gnaws at my gut, and my sense of a simple saying, COME ON ALREADY, JUST DO THE CORRECT THING. But then I sadly realize that POLITICS AND POLITICIANS are man-made and sometimes not made for man or woman!

My mother never stopped me from watching movies about Aliens from Space but suggested if I watched those movies in the afternoon, perhaps the scary parts would fade away before nighttime, and she added, isn’t the NIGHT TIME when creatures prefer to wander free. My father on the other hand sighed and said, what good is a scary movie if it ISN’T DARK OUTSIDE because everyone knows that creatures are scarier in the dark! I grew up during the ’50s the decade when the scary part of living was the fear from the Russians and other Communists who were certain to invade America and INSTANTLY defeat DEMOCRACY. Hollywood, it seemed, used the idea of the unknown and created, at least for me, the best of the worst SCI-FI movies, and there were more ALIEN INVASIONS predicted than I had time to watch, be it in the day time, or even better at NIGHT! 

 

The one movie which to this day still sends a CHILL THROUGHOUT my body is INVADERS FROM MARS. Imagine being the kid in that movie, watching his parents turn into MONSTERS…AHHHH, UGHHH, I had to watch that movie with all lights on in the house, and never at night. My daughter (both of my kids, were also raised on ALIEN AND ZOMBIE movies) recently bought me a sweatshirt with the poster for INVADERS FROM MARS printed on it. And as I wore it, a thought entered my mind; a thought which had prevailed as I read the excuses from the JANUARY 6, INSURECTIONISTS, as to why they thought a political coup was a GOOD THING. The ALIENS in the form of TRUMP and his CONFEDERATE/NAZI/LOVING/FASCIST/RACIST SWAMP CREATURES did indeed invade this nation, albeit not from MARS, but worse, from the hallways and households of HELL. I will not tell you how the movie INVADERS FROM MARS ends, but let me caution you, it ends with a warning!

What to do

 I waited a day, tried to ignore my usual go-to, FACEBOOK, after all, I had a birthday, this one was number 72, and the love of friends and family still circled me as might the whirling winds of a waterspout in its infancy. Waterspouts during their creation are joys to watch, full of wonder, and always intriguing as to which direction they might next fly or just how quickly they might appear then dissipate. It is perhaps when a waterspout decides it must form into a feature larger and more dangerous that instantly, the very adorable freak of nature is now a feature of nature, from which one must run for cover.  So, on October 22, 2021, I casually glanced at my FB page, and dabbed a few responses, but said to myself, NO NOT TODAY, give it a bit of a rest.

 

I am torn, TRULY torn, in an emotional way, and a sense of brooding-ish malaise has found footing in my conscience. I have read some terrible decisions initiated by some of the BIG SHOTS at FACEBOOK; some intentional MALARKY, EXECUTIVES at FB had permitted to seep onto the once American fertile soil, almost as an insidious salutation to America, stating NO ONE IS THE BOSS OF US… (I may end up in FB jail, for expressing my opinion). I am dismayed, angry, and wish that the TRUTH of these whistleblower complaints could be proven or disqualified. I now have to decide what part I play in accepting the pathway of this SOCIAL MEDIA giant.

 

Selfish are my choices to stay or leave this platform. I have always believed in the phrase “SILENCE EQUALS DEATH,” so I have used my FB page to scream what I believe to be injustices and hypocrisy; to call them out, even though I am ONLY one small citizen. I also am motivated by the phrases, “ACT UP, ACT OUT, ACT LOUD,” and use my FB page to provide that “whack on the side of the head, that shovel to pick your head out of the sand, and moment of realization that bad things can even happen to good people. To not be able to SPEAK, to SHARE, to SAY SO, worry me.  I have met new people on FB, reconnected with people from my decades of experiences, and enjoyed learning some new facts from friends and family, and also glad to rid myself of those who no longer care to be a member of my village. What to do, what to do!

72 and thanks

 As I embrace my 72^nd year alive, and well, I want to reflect on how who and why I got here, these seven decades, two years, after Howard and Rena Buncher announced the birth of Gerald William. A long row to hoe, but the efforts, energy, education, insights, intuitiveness, interests of the people directly in my life, as well indirectly demonstrating how I live and how to thrive, INDEED, cause me to pause and become a bit introspective, knowing without the village, being a lone survivor would, for me, have been futile!

 

My parents, teaching me to understand what is unique about the world, and at the same time just how common we all can be. My sisters, demonstrating the art of three sisters, two parents, and one boy sharing one bathroom during the days of the ’50s and 60’s when just to tease a hairdo, can take up to 3 hours. And of course, the unconditional love of siblings taught us to respect one another. My grandparents who may have prepared me to be a KING, but whose own stories of survival, taught me to be humble. The droves of relatives, who during my first two decades of life all seemed to live in Pittsburgh, and always were involved in holidays, birthdays Bar Mitzvah’s weddings, and the shared sorrow and loss at funerals. My mentors and teachers, those who said, yep Gerry, you got places to go, people to see…Mrs. Park, Mrs. Langer, Mrs. Thurman, and Mrs. Musoff, Bubba, Jerry, Dickie to name a few. My best of friends, Martin, Dan, Joel, Stuart, Jando, Rachel, Betsy, and my first love, Pamela,. My children, Adam, and Dani, whose first breath took my breath away and made my life magical. And my husband, Joe, who taught me that indeed, LOVE IS LOVE.

 

BUT for this year, 2021, I want to thank all of the scientists, physicians, nurses, who without their tireless efforts to keep human KIND, HUMAN, perhaps I would not be able to celebrate this 72^nd year of life! If NOT for those who had developed and delivered vaccines for…Chicken Pox/Diphtheria, The Flu, Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Pneumococcal, Rotavirus, Rubella, Tetanus, Whooping Cough, AND CORONAVIRUS, where would all of us, even the VAXX DENIERS BE? And on this 72^nd birthday, I mourn the over 4.92 million deaths from Covid, and DETEST the sheer inhumanity of those, who pretend to play GOD, acting out of lunacy, ignorance, and bigotry!

Perhaps sometime today, The House, one Tier of Government still led, by albeit a slim majority of Democrats, is to decide exactly what the fuck to do about a fuckwad named Steve Bannon, and his seemingly TEFLON arrogance of DISSING the Constitutional Rule of Law. Hemming and hawing regarding what might be, for the majority of Americans a VERY dangerous road to travel, the Congress is still playing the game of “HEY STEVE, YOU ACTUALLY MIGHT HAVE A CHOICE TO IGNORE OUR SUBPOENA!” It is beyond my understanding to actually UNDERSTAND, how a middle finger to the house is a thing, but somehow we are still watching a DEBATE unravel as to… “what the fuck, and who the fuck!”

 

Many of The Trump Swamp Creatures seem to luxuriate in pretending DEMOCRACY has already been declared DEAD, and in my point of view actually are CELEBRATING, the demise of law and order, justice, and bad actions never having WORSE consequences. Someone, seriously explain this to me. It reminds me of the thought I too often have of: DO THE CEO’S AND BILLIONAIRES OF THIS WORLD ACTUALLY THINK WHEN THE EARTH DIES, THAT THEIR WEALTH WILL SOMEHOW SAVE THEM?

 It was 8:15 a.m. I slept in as I had one of those miserable nights in which I, as a man of a certain age, spent more time walking from my bed to the bathroom, peeing, and being pissed off that I had to pee so much. It was 8:20 a.m., I got out of bed, of course first heading to the bathroom, yet once again, and as I cursed my bladder or is it my prostate, I recalled a dream I had, a seemingly reoccurring dream I had about me needing my I-Phone to escape some dark dangerous place, but my I-Phone had morphed into a flip phone, and that flip phone needed a charge. I then remembered I had awoken from that dream because in that dream I also had to find a bathroom! It was now 8:25 a.m. having washed my hands and brushed my teeth, I glanced over at my iPhone, which was still on the charger, and I cautiously walked close enough to it, just to make certain it was NOT a flip phone. AND THEN, I had to tell my right hand to stop, placing my left hand in my pocket, JUST to be sure it did not disobey and reach for the phone. (That part was an exaggeration, but I did have to say to myself, no Phone, now, please, just not yet.)

 

But I believe SILENCE IS DEATH, ACT UP, ACT OUT, ACT LOUD…so as much as I wanted to avoid the world around me. (I would use the phrase REAL WORLD, but honestly, the times in which we find ourselves living make the term REAL WORLD, seem RIDICULOUS…). Chilly, at least for an Ex-Angelino, the wind gusting to 30 mph, a dreary and dull 56 degrees, the rain blowing horizontally, huge drops bouncing against, bands of teeny tiny spickets creating a waterfall effect, all aiming in infinite directions but somehow all eventually finding our windows and porches, sounding as if there was a Battle of the Bands taking place in our backyard. Of course, I worried about the family of Turkeys the Chipmunks and Squirrels who have been feasting on the birdseed, Joe has placed in the four Bird Feeders, knowing that THEY actually ARE prepared for the moods of Mother Nature much better than their human counterparts; but the bleak format presented on this Tuesday, October 5, 2021, with seemingly behemoth clouds in a spectrum of white to gray to black, and the tall pine trees flexing and yawning, and out Birch trees fanned out like the feathers of a Peacock, minus the hues of blues and purple, made me wonder, how prepared are they REALLY!

 

I felt unable, on this day to actually read the news of the world. I could have easily grasped my phone, scrolled the way too many news sights from which I perseverate, and ponder, regarding the idiots, the politicians who prey on the idiots, the hypocrites who act like idiots, and the dirge of wanna be God-like clergy who love inciting faux religious doctrine having the idiots remain idiots in hopes of somehow having their God reward them. I mean the doom and gloom outside were actually begging me to find a cave, dark and dank, huddle inside with just enough light from a fire made of crappy tinder and fret, worry, and grow weary that THE BAD GUY SEEMS TO BE WINNING ALL THE TIME!

 

But, INSTEAD, my INNER VOICE, the one which usually stands aside as my OUTER VOICE demands attention, grabbed my conscience, and said, play the songs which can bring hope and promise, watch the wicked weather roam outside, but inside, make peace with the day, and chase the awful away with LOVE. So, I did, and the lyrics which are the prelude to my BLOG were written by my daughter, Dani and my unofficially adopted son, Scott, both of the musical group called TEAMMATE. Hmmm. So the ULTRA WEALTHY OWNERS OF THE EARTH, have had some of their secrets revealed, or is the word I am searching for REVILED! Seems these CON ARTISTS are a MELTING POT of demographics, so I suppose GREED/GLUTTONY actually have no barriers when it comes to RACE/ETHNICITY/GENDER. OFFSHORE ACCOUNTS/NON -EXISTING on PAPER ACCOUNTS/LABYRINTHS and HIDDEN CAVES, matters not the location, but somehow a part of the SECRET of a CULT of CREEPS has been opened, you know like that ever evil and interesting PANDORA’S BOX. I will continue to pursue and question and rant and rave. I will choose this next battlefield to demand the truth, BUT DAMN the odds seemed to be stacked and stacked against the average human!

PERIL, AGAIN

  On A Personal Note (as if, when I BLOG, all of what I write is not personal). I purchased the book PERIL, by Bob Woodward and Robert Costa. My initial reason had been to discover real evidence as to why I LOATHED Trump (and still do), and as to why I wish the VERY WORST for all of his ass-lickers/orange turd collectors/self-serving politicians placing their careers above even the welfare of their own families, paranoid, suicide seeking, pre-meditated murderers identifying MAGA cultists. I perceived that the EVIDENCE of Treason/Anarchy/Tyranny/ would be plenty, but I also wanted to weigh that EVIDENCE, perhaps TO JUSTIFY my fear, that if enough people do not work together…TRUMPISM might not be stopped, and the 71 years of my life, the lives of my children, the lives of all of the third generation of my family might end in a TRAGEDY. A TRAGEDY I believe that IS mocking us (please do not comment I am being overly dramatic, for if you do all I can say is eventually you will suffocate from keeping your head in the sand for so long) …and seems to be downplayed by WAY TOO MANY (Yeah Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, you both are as evil as the January 6^th Insurrectionists as far as I am concerned.)

 

I read the book, almost hurrying through some chapters because the content was actually so anxiety-producing for me. I just had to put the book down and at times move it to another room, so if I woke up to pee, I would not see it, and probably shit in my pants! Once I finished a sort of breeze through reading (in high school we were taught to speed read, something I thought my ADD would enjoy, but I never mastered that talent and ended up getting a C in Mr. Wells's class, an educator who appreciated literature!) And upon finishing the book, I realized I was acting in a passive-aggressive manner. There was a hard truth to discover and brushing through it was not the answer. So to make my long story shorter, I have begun rereading PERIL and using the ever-popular OLD COLLEGE (as in old school) method, the precious YELLOW MARKER. OY!

 

Page Two, of Chapter One: Joe Biden had been talking to one of his confidants Mike Donilon, as Joe Biden watched Trump make his Racist comments regarding Charlottesville VA,” (Yep MAGA’s you love him for that Racist Gene in his body), TRUMP declaring “…there was hatred bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides…” (PERIL). Joe Biden told his friend and confidant, Mr. Donilon, “…What’s different about this moment in history is that the American people are going to have to stand up and defend the country’s values and the Constitution because they don’t have a President who is going to do it.” (PERIL). I am appalled (NOT surprised) by the continuous DISREGARD and HATRED for DEMOCRACY and THUS for ALL AMERICANS by the people with names of CRUZ/MCCONNELL/GRAHAM/JORDAN/GREENE/GAETZ/Mc CARTHY to name a few and wish the rest of this nation who still prefer to remain silent, SPEAK UP/ACT OUT, before none of that is legal within this nation!

On the same ears of those who insist that their children DO NOT NEED MASKS, that they as Parents of those kids also DO NOT NEED MASKS or VACCINATIONS, that somehow saving a FETUS inside the womb is a lesson from their God, but once that Fetus becomes an Infant, breathing oxygen outside the womb, who the fuck cares! You know, because if you gave birth YOU HAVE TO pay the bills, for food, shelter, health, and welfare, NO MATTER WHAT.

 

And the lesson of NO CONTROLS regarding Gun Ownership will be IGNORED by anyone Republican because the Second Amendment is MUCH MORE A PRIORITY for them to be re-elected. So a kid dies, or kids die, or 100’s of kids die or 1000’s of kids die…a GOP Politicians desire to be KING or QUEEN is much too important to let CHILDREN’S LIVES be saved. I am certain THOUGHTS AND PRAYERS WERE OFFERED, ya know pretending to care is a Republican Trait!
