"The Exorcist"

 The most frightening scene, for me, in the film version of The “Exorcist” was the time when the director, William Friedkin, led us slowly, deliberately toward Regan MacNeil’s bedroom. We all knew something was about to happen, and I still hear the gasps, the squeals, and the watchouts being muttered from the theater audience. I knew something was about to happen. My anxiety filled my body, and thinking if I closed one eye entirely while keeping the other halfway looking, it might make whatever was to come next a bit more tolerable. I presumed that there was going to be some kind of horrific creature waiting, lurking, creeping inside Regan’s bedroom, and the walk down that hallway seemed an eternity.

 

My friend, sitting next to me, with one hand over his eye and his other almost turning blue from grabbing the armrest, was able to whisper (I do believe with less enthusiasm than he wanted to project) what if all this is, is William Friedkin, showing us that we imagine the worst, fearing what might happen, and behind the bedroom door, is just Regan sleeping.

 

I watched “The Exorcist” in 1973, and some 51 years later, whenever I even think about the movie, I still feel the knot of gnawing angst, and the nauseating grip of anxiety fill my gut.

 

It is 2024, only 6 days until an American election, which seems spooky, haunted, nightmarish, and doomed for me as I watched the long and tedious walk down the hallway within the MacNeil house. In the movie “The Exorcist,” it took Chris MacNeil perhaps only a few excruciating minutes to reach her daughter’s bedroom and see what was actually waiting for her behind that door. This TRUMP/VANCE horror flick began for me when, on November 15, 2022, Trump announced his campaign for President. It is still a long walk down that hallway, and I want to stop fearing that behind the election door for America is nothing like the Demon in “The Exorcist”!

OTHERING

 Othering is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labeled as not fitting in within the norms of a social group. On an individual level, othering plays a role in the formation of prejudices against people and groups. On a larger scale, it can also play a role in the dehumanization of entire groups of people which can then be exploited to drive changes in institutions, governments, and societies. I would wish that I had the genie in the bottle to beg the journalists and reporters to stop playing the corporate game and ask some honest questions, especially of the current crop of Republican Trump Court Jesters. As I see it, Trump survives only because of the many spineless and soulless Republicans who seem to have little trouble in placating Trump to save their own political careers. 

 

Why not push, and push, and push these Republicans on some very relevant questions? How about asking them why they support a man who has declared that if elected, he will enact authoritarianist, Fascist leadership, defining his enemies as enemies of the state? I firmly believe in the state of Israel, and I just as firmly believe that Jewish people living anywhere in the world have the right to exist, the right to equality, and the right to live in peace. 

 

When I read about the super-wealthy Jewish donors supporting TRUMP, I become nauseated. Somehow, this demographic of Jews seems to believe that Trump's so-called affection for Israel makes him some king of the Jews. This same demographic of Jews in America too quickly forgets Trump’s anti-Semitic tropes and his disparaging of Jews living not in Israel but in the United States.  TRUMP made it very clear that there are good people on both sides, as in the stating that Nazis are fine folks.          

 

Trump's disdain for any minority is apparent and appalling. Trump’s association with Project 2025 clarifies that he supports an Evangelical Christian Nationalist America. Yes, the Jewish people living in Israel should live in peace, but Trump has demonstrated that Jews living in America do not deserve the same fate. Have the Jewish voters who either still support Trump or the so-called undecided Jewish voters pretend that there is no difference between Harris and Trump ever read history books? Trump hates, Trump loathes, Trump is a con. Trump is not a friend, a cohort, a believer in the Jewish people.
