"Your papers, please" is an expression or trope associated with police state functionaries demanding identification from civilians during random stops or at checkpoints. It is a cultural metaphor for life in a police state. A German soldier in uniform, or a Gestapo agent in plain clothes, would utter the spine-chilling words “Papiere, Bitte” (”Papers, Please”). What made those words spine chilling was the fact that whoever they were uttered to was in imminent danger of arrest, imprisonment, torture, and execution. (Mises Institute).
No longer is it history, the kind of fearful didn’t we learn our lesson once before history, but the entire Fascist/Nazi playbook of authoritarianism nationalism has become our reality our norm. One should beg the question, who is next?
