Fear of Drowning

 A BRIEF TALE: I was seven years old my younger sister five. It was our first trip to Lake Erie, and my first time experiencing a body of water larger than a river. I had never seen an ocean, and when we arrived at a town called Geneva-On-The-Lake in Ohio, I was mesmerized, amazed, and in total AWE! My parents explained that this was a Lake, smaller than the ocean, but just as much fun. Holy Cow, this lake was so large it touched the horizon. Life was good at the age of seven, I actually discovered (at least for me) a wonder of the world! My father explained to my little sister and me that we would walk about ten feet into the water. At first, he said, he would carry us, explaining that there was a drop in the sand, and the water might be deep, but in a few minutes, he would put us down as within Lake Erie, there was something called a SAND BAR. It was the magic of the Lake, he added, a way for kids to enjoy the water safely! My Dad was never one to disappoint, so whatever he said, I knew was true. We were out about ten feet, and the horizon seemed to expand, as did the distance to the shore, but as my father told us, my little sister and I were standing…STANDING IN A LAKE, (and even though I had little idea what ten feet measured) WE WERE IN TH MIDDLE OF LAKE, as far as I was concerned. And then, out of nowhere, the sandbar (whatever that was) disappeared and in what seemed a matter of seconds, I was underwater. I had no idea what happened, but instinctively knew I needed to breathe. This happened a long time ago for me, so minutes may have been seconds, seconds may have been nanoseconds, but as I remember it I was drowning; as in all I heard was “it will be alright, don’t worry.” My father scooped me up, and held me so high I thought I could touch the sky.  My sister was in one hand, I in the other, and all I remember was my father, kissing me, and my sister, and kissing us again and again!

 

A REMINDER:

Today, I had a kind of ‘Whack on the side of the head’ as I read the headlines for Sunday, July 31, 2022. I permit myself about 10 minutes to read, scream what the fuck, read, holler, how the Hell, read and remorsefully, read and woefully SIGH. But today, for some reason, my experience at Geneva-On-The-Lake, Ohio came slamming into me a might a trailer truck jack-knifing on a Highway. I became even more apprehensive and fearful, and that knot of anxiety tried to cut off my gut. And then the ‘Whack on the side of the head’! I suddenly realized that the current events of the year 2022, reminded me of my time in Lake Erie…and Lo and Behold, I had this FEAR OF DROWNING…a suffocating, dismal dull ache…but this time no one told me it would be alright!

I have to wonder if these same American Christian Nationalists, would protect the Zygote or Fetus if it was found out that, THAT Zygote or Fetus was an LGBT?????? Now, let's pretend that somehow YOU, the American out in the BIGOTED ZONES of AMERIKA, think, I am way too Christian to create an LGBT egg. I mean MY sperm is 100% Macho, Macho Man, and my Chattel’s egg, my Sexual Victim’s egg, my Daughter, or Granddaughter’s egg is 100% Straight…so it AIN’T POSSIBLE, to have a QUEER! McCarthy and McConnell insist they were not at the place in Tampa in which White Supremacists paraded, so that means no matter how many photos or videos appeared on the Internet or Media, it did not happen.

Imagine how DeSantis would not have been accepted to Yale University or Harvard Law School had he been enrolled in the current catastrophe which has become the education low standards for Florida. Thoughts

 Today, Sunday, July 24, 2022, I feel completely exhausted. Should I avoid reading the news, shun any headline that BEGINS with the word TRUMP, and ends with WHAT IS NEXT? Should I just wish away the deadly doom of a new day, and concentrate on anything but current events? Can I afford to either keep my head in the sand or up my own anal opening? And then, what exactly can and does raising my voice via a Blog, or my commentaries written via articles on Facebook really achieve? But then I was a teen during the 1960s a college student as the decade of 1970 began, and there had been way too many moments in history where QUIET and IGNORANCE were nothing but COWARDNECE and AVOIDANCE! And to pretend one voice cannot make a difference is nothing but a COP-OUT!

 

I remained in the closet as the AIDS- epidemic devoured this country. I worried of course, that just being Gay might mean the virus would find me. I watched the activists of ACT-UP risk life and limb. I was at the University of Pittsburgh protesting the Viet Nam War when Nixon decided to murder students, my peers, at Kent State, and I wondered could if Nixon knew about a small college like Kent and what might happen in Pittsburgh. I registered for the draft and made myself 1-A waiting anxiously to see if it was my turn to fight a very questionable war. I watched my friends, brave and patriotic enlist and fight in a war, in which there was never going to be a peaceful end. I was a white kid, with no problem with the Police, but eventually, when I became friends with kids non-white I learned from them, from their personal first-hand stories, that not all people in this nation ARE considered equals!

 

So now, at the ripe old age of 72, I am scared, afraid, no longer from some foreign country army invading this nation, but more fearful of an enemy WITHIN my country. The fear I feel aches in my bones like arthritis, it pounds my head like a migraine, it paralyzes me! Civil War, say the MAGA who no longer have infested the GOP, but have been welcomed and received by the Republican Party. Fascism and Authoritarianism have become the guiding light for Christian Nationalists who delight in OUTING THE OTHER, who worship a vigilante God, who have a non-ideal of Equality. Freedom or Love. I have only my words so far from which to fight, but I will refuse to acquiesce to the BAD PEOPLE in this country, and I will FIGHT the fight for GOOD!

Already feeling as if some Demon had possessed my computer and was using my screen as an entry into my body, I scanned the news only to discover this bit of Holy Shit Info, coming from a wanna-be Republican candidate for lieutenant governor of Minnesota, Matt Birk. “We always hear about, I’m sure you’ve heard—I know I’m talking to a bunch of pro-life warriors here—you know slavery used to be legal, right. Which is an interesting comparison to make, because really the way that the other side treats an unborn child is basically that the unborn child is the property of the mother. Other laws, you know, women used to not be able to vote in our country. Now we let ’em drive. I mean, I have three teenager daughters that drive, I don’t know if that’s a good law or not. Just kidding. Sorry, kidding, kidding to all the women out there. And don’t tell my wife I used that joke, she hates that joke.”

 

Somehow that fetus in the womb of a female is now government property. If a stranger or family member desires to have his way with this female who by all means must be asking for a good RAPE, sexually penetrates her, LIVE AND LET LIVE!  No longer a mother, the lady is a CARRIER of a seed. Once that seed turns into a flower, IT will belong to some kind of bizarro church that will do NOTHING to educate IT, feed IT, and protect IT. To be honest, none of the facts came as a surprise, and if they did to anyone out there in AMERICA-LAND, you either have been paralyzed by FOX, born with the genes of a Bigot or Racist or just are completely unable to save yourself from any form of problems! To have ever underestimated TRUMP and provided him with any iota of EVER DOING THE RIGHT THING, makes you exactly the kind of fool from which he thrives by sucking the oxygen from your lungs. YET, his gang of enablers, seem to have done just all of that easily, by remaining in office, providing the AFTER-THE FACT apology, perhaps resigning but remaining silent on all the evil which had been done!

I mean Elon, why wait for MAN INVENTED INFLATION to end, when you, acting as the all-powerful OZ, can begin that domino effect, as I see it you still are a man and not some God on Olympus! Hmmm, let me understand this, Cool Whip Factories had broken down, the food in the chemical industry stopped making any artificial crap, and Cool Whip is going to be banned? NOPE, NADA, ZILCH none of that, just plain old greed, supply and demand, and artificial pricing pretending to be something SWELL, oozing from Capitalism. So Elon, if your great idea is to pretend that you care about inflation, start by fighting it, and lower your prices FIRST!

This girl does exist, and sadly, she did go through this horrible experience. This week, a 27-year-old man was charged with raping her. 

This news did not provoke much soul-searching. Republicans instead doubled down on their position that people should be forced to give birth.

Men now demand that RAPE victims carry the fetus and remain docile and dumb. Men and their CHATTEL, oops I mean women, who somehow think their Lady Parts are different than most other women and will never be forced to become pregnant, have no concern for the well-being of even a 10-year-old girl, play God and Goddess, pretending that THEY and only THEY know good from bad, rotten from really rotten!

The Southern States wanted to maintain and continue owning slaves, to continue and diminish human rights, and to actually categorize Negros as chattel! HOW IN THE WORLD, could that be permitted as just every day business in Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, etc., etc., etc.?

And now it seems that the future of this nation, is relying HEAVILY on evil spirits from the past, once thought dead and done, to predict our future.

 

Violence has become popular, popularized by those who believe that the Sword is Mightier than the Pen. Those who think in defining the OTHER, make it easier not to have to define THEMSELVES! The will to engage via communication is somehow too abstract and the dominant force from which to dialogue is to incite fear, and eventually murder! In reading the press reports, it seems you are almost ready to proceed, but I do question the issue about having your Secretary of HHS, Xavier Becerra, take 30 days to propose a means by which you can be certain that no laws will be broken by selling contraceptives across state lines, and some kind of safe access for women deciding upon their reproductive rights. It seems to me, Mr. President, that any matter of time wasted, is one fewer day women and their family has to remain healthy. I urge you to speed up decisions by Secretary Becerra.

 

I am a supporter, President Biden, and believe you have tried to bring back this nation from a dangerous brink, but please Sir, explain why in the world you would consider making a deal with Senator McConnell, regarding a Federal Judge in Kentucky? The media has stated that you want Senator McConnell to NOT block two Kentucky District Attorney for one Federal Judge. I know, President Biden, you are aware that a Federal Judge is a lifetime appointment, while District Attorneys can be voted in an out of office. Add to that the very politicization of a Supreme Court which has certainly removed anything supreme in its 1950s approach to the issues facing Americans in 2022, and WE THE PEOPLE suffer the consequences of a REPUBLICAN PARTY playing dirty, and a DEMOCRAT PARTY, being played!

 

Right now, as is a real concern, Americans are worried about the cost of living as it relates to the prices of just trying to survive. What is missing, and the Republicans understand this, IS, the longer view as to what costs are Americans willing to ignore as in FREEDOMS/LIBERTY/EQUALITY fade away or go up in smoke? If the cost of gasoline makes it impossible to get to work or to shop, and once you get to shop, the prices for everything seem unbearable, no one wants to weigh abortion rights/LGBTQ rights/racism against that…BECAUSE as we seem to be smothering from sticker shock everything else seems secondary! The GOP has always been excellent at scaring us for the MOMENT, knowing that having a faux monster in front of you will jolt you, while the real fear should be the monster under the bed!

RECLAIMING

 So on year number 245 and a day, while my country is still a semblance of democracy, I like Maxine Waters once stated, “I am reclaiming my time!”

And as I reclaim my time, I am also reclaiming the REAL definition of words and phrases, which have been greatly TRUMPED (TRUMPED-to dump, destroy, nullify, falsify, distort) by individuals whose seemingly sole purpose of being an AMERICAN is to truly become UNAMERICAN!

 

PRO-LIFE, sorry Evangelical White Christian Nationalists, but you have no idea of living and breathing! PRO-LIFE, respect for all humans currently alive; as in school children no longer needing a refresher on ACTIVE SHOOTERS, as in theater goers, parade crowds, concert-goers, supermarket patrons, Black folks walking, driving, sitting in their homes not having to wait, watch, anticipate the worst to happen to them via people owning guns!

The Constitution is words written at a time in our history when the most destructive weapon was a musket, slavery was a cool thing, and women were considered chattel. They were words written by a bunch of white guys who tried their best to remedy their lives in a society that was not permissive to Indigenous Peoples of North America and considered the Militia as a force to fight the Monarchy. You cannot pick and choose, accept or reject passages from the Constitution, as you certainly do with your Bibles, which suit your whims (or is it BIASES OR BIGOTRY) and call it law.

 

I am tired of being on the DEFENSE, and HONESTLY beg the question AGAIN AND AGAIN, why does the so-called DEMOCRAT PARTY LEADERSHIP, always seem to wear a sign “KICK ME!”

 I have to wonder, OUT LOUD, on this holiday celebrating 246 years of the birth of the United States of America, just how many more days, months, years, and decades, might be remaining, to honor the sacrifices and urgencies demonstrated by honest women and men to maintain the ideals of Democracy? 

 

The juxtaposition of statutes from a once considered JUST, Supreme Court, in which they have denied personal freedoms regarding reproductive rights for women, removed the rights for citizens to vote in a fair and equitable environment, knocking out the wall between church and state, to establishing somehow the SECOND AMENDMENT, as the holiest of amendments, permitting random acts of murder by GUN to usurp lives of the INNOCENT and NOT acknowledging hate speech, and racist rhetoric as cohabitators of violence alongside ASSAULT WEAPONS, is OVERWHELMING, and FRIGHTFUL.

 

On this 246-year birthday, it seems to me that the Republican Right-Wing Fascists preferring Christian Nationalism over Liberty and Justice for all mock the history of this nation and pretend that any fact to the matter that freedom was the intent of the Founding Fathers; FREEDOM from TYRANNY from Religion, the Monarchy, is somehow CRITICAL and INSULTING. 

 

And even more amazing to me, is how those of us who want to preserve our Bill of Rights, are always on the DEFENSIVE, always fighting back!

Why have those of us the millions more who year after year vote for Presidential candidates who at least speak of JUSTICE FOR ALL, have to take a back seat to the THUGS, GANGS, GOONS, PUPPET MASTERS, who manipulate, maul, and maneuver the minions whose only claim to any fame is to HATE?

 State legislatures have already introduced or enacted laws in a number of GOP-controlled states that voting rights groups say make it more difficult to cast a ballot. Experts say if the Supreme Court adopts the independent legislature theory, it would give state lawmakers ultimate control over election-related decisions like redistricting, as well as issues such as voting qualifications and voting by mail.

“This is part of a broader strategy to make voting harder and impose the will of state legislatures regardless of the will of the people,” said Suzanne Almeida, director of state operations for Common Cause, a nonpartisan pro-democracy group. “It is a significant change to the power of state courts to rein in state legislatures.” (Washington Post)

 

I LOVE Horror Movies. I LOVE reading Science Fiction. I grew up watching Chiller Theater as a kid in Pittsburgh, sitting on our living room sofa, as the clock struck 11:30 pm, having first locked every conceivable door any conceivable monster might enter and closing tightly any window and curtains any conceivable monster might try to peek in and look at me. From the haunting theme, Experiment In Terror, to Chilly Billy Cardilly’s entrance, I sat mesmerized by the sheer pleasure of becoming scared shitless. I mean just the idea that I was up past MIDNIGHT, while my parents were asleep upstairs, having only my Grandmothers handknitted Afghan to protect me was daring enough but add to that a plethora of creatures MIGHT enter my living room via the television set was, for me pushing my limits. But then if it was just one feature, seeking all the bravery I could muster up, around 1:00 am I would hold my breath, switch the power off of the two table lamps, walk over to the TV and shut that off, and race as fast as I could, with my eyes closed to the safety of my bedroom. (And when there was a Double Chiller Theater and the UNGODLY hour of 2:30 am approached I knew I was really risking the wrath of all kinds of monsters, who lurked around just waiting for some kid to be captured).

 

BUT then it was over. But then, all the crazy, the evil, the bad ended with the final credits. The Chiller Theater theme music, Experiment in Terror, played but with less force, and I knew if I was able to get to my bedroom faster than any monster, I would be safe!

 

REALITY in AMERICA has become, for me as FRIGHTENING as any CREATURE/MONSTER/ALIEN/I have seen on TV in the movies or read in a book. And for me, even more, horrendous are the CHRISTIAN NATIONALISTS JUSTICES who have begun to dismantle any remaining speck of Democracy and replace it with a form of RELIGIOUS FASCISM. Unlike my childhood, where once I could find safety under my blankets or my Grandmothers Afghan, I am not certain where or how a Happy Ever Ending will appear!

The executive was to be feared and constrained; the judiciary was, in comparison, an afterthought mostly left to future Congresses to craft. In drafting the Federalist Papers, Alexander Hamilton considered the courts the “least dangerous to the political rights of the Constitution.”

ONCE AGAIN, as in, again and again, it seems to me that the DEMOCRATS seem content to wear the T-Shirt that says, “I AM STUPID,” or “WHAT ME WORRY,” I do not understand, why or how the leadership within the DEMOCRAT PARTY, seem to trip all over themselves as they race to the bottom! Nancy Pelosi at least has made some attempts to lead the offense while most everyone else is always trying to fill in the gaps of the defense. (Even with the January 6^th hearings we have Liz Cheney as the most talked-about leader)

 

I have read my Political Science materials, my Civics lessons, and the US History records, and I am still baffled that the SUPREME COURT has the SWAY and POWER to knock the breath out of a majority of Americans. I have watched McConnell buy and sell our Democracy to his highest bidders, as Schumer just pontificates we’ll get you next time Mitch; as the NEXT, and NEXT, and NEXT time arrive! NOW we have men and women UNELECTED, many placed into their positions (by Presidents who have NOT won by a majority vote) acting as the SUPREME DICTATOR. WHERE IS THE DESIRE BY DEMOCRATS TO STOP THIS NONSENSE?
