"Time Enough at Last" became one of the most famous episodes of the original Twilight Zone and has been frequently parodied since. It is "the story of a man who seeks salvation in the rubble of a ruined world" and tells of Henry Bemis, played by Burgess Meredith who loves books, yet is surrounded by those who would prevent him from reading them. The episode follows Bemis through the post-apocalyptic world, touching on such social issues as anti-intellectualism, the dangers of reliance upon technology, and the difference between aloneness (solitude) and loneliness. For those, who HAVE never watched this episode of the Twilight Zone, the ending is one of frustration, as the character, of Henry Bemis, who NOW can read as many books as he wishes, breaks his glasses, and thus becomes unable to read a single word, as he cannot see anything but a blurred world! Each day, I awake, I first wonder, if somehow the non-blackmailed Republicans have come to their senses and have begun working on the 25thAmendment, or somehow Trump finally realized that not only will he be in jail, but his most precious of his spawn, Ivanka will also be in jail, so he has taken an Aeroflot to Moscow to live in the confines of the Kremlin. But I reluctantly, and with great promise to Joe, my husband with great patience and understanding, watch only 10 minutes of whatever Talking head is on MSNBC, and realize that yes indeed we are still living in the Twilight Zone, or perhaps better stated, the Trump Zone, and that the democracy of my country has been and IS still being compromised. Each day, I begin to assume, and we all know what assume means, (making as ASS out of U and Me) that Comrade McConnell and Little Light in the Loafers Lindsey Graham are still being blackmailed by Putin and still pretending that Trump is not a Compromised Agent of Russia, so not a fucking thing is being done to remove a treasonous despot from office.
The only bit of almost good news for me, and God knows (the God I believe in, not the one who hates Gays, or women, or people of color), it is just a teeny bit of kind of good news IS, that a few more wanna be’s and MAGA bigots surrounding themselves with Trump/Putin are beginning to let slip more and more truth about all the Trump lies. Or as Trump, the King of the Trump Crime Family would say, the “rats” are leaving the ship.
So, perhaps, like the character Burgess Meredith portrayed in the Twilight Zone episode, “Time Enough at Last”, who thought that nothing at all mattered once he was able to keep the world to himself, America is beginning to see a man without sight, or conscience, or moral, or values, stumble and fall and become nothing more than a useless vessel. Oh please God, please!
