2023 EVE

 As my parents got ready for their New Year's Eve outing, my mother first had to finish some very important tasks around our house. My younger sister and I first had to promise that we would not team up and make our older sisters' life hell. Only on Pre-New Year’s Eve, as my parents really wanted to leave our house and have fun, both parents would say separately, “There Can Be No Hell In This House Tonight, your sister is the boss, and she is babysitting for you!

 

This was not just a nod kind of acknowledgment but involved a spoken word of a promise from my sister Francie and me, with no crossed fingers behind our backs. AND, as we spoke, we both had to say we would behave, by looking my mother in the eye. It was my Grandmother, my mother's mother, who told us that truth only becomes truth if you actually add eye contact. (This was very hard because as New Year's Eve approached, Francie and I made a pact to make my older sister, Bonnie’s life miserable.)

 

Another task implemented by my mother was to make us a New Year’s Eve dinner, with homemade Corned Beef, all the pickles and olives we could eat, mashed potatoes, and for dessert homemade Chocolate Cake, with the most delicious coconut icing. Plus, we could actually have Coca-Cola. (I had no idea how wonderful Coca-Cola tasted, as we usually had the Pop Man (Soda for anyone not from Pittsburgh) deliver Regent Pop, a local grade B brand.) And we had named brand Potato Chips, instead of the generic brand from our Grocery Store, Star market. It was difficult to have to listen to Bonnie, but the rewards made the effort worthwhile.

 

My parents would get ready to leave the house. My Dad was in his dapper hat, New Year's Tie, with party hats and confetti as part of the print, and my mother looked like a movie star, in her very green dress wearing her favorite pair of earrings made from ruby and emeralds. I can still smell the aroma of Old Spice After Shave from my father, and the precious and soothing aroma of my mother's Chanel No 5, which my mother told us was Marilyn Monroe’s favorite.

 

We never managed to stay up until Midnight, but when we awoke the next day, there would be some very special surprises awaiting us on the dining room table. Francie and Bonnie would have a paper-made tiara with the newest of years on the front, and I would have a paper top hat. There would be three noise makers, three bundles of ready-to-throw confetti, and the best thing ever, three pieces of New Years' Eve cake wrapped in paper towels. 

 

I hope, MEMORIES will continue to be made, as we move forward in time, holding dear, the past year, and approaching the horizons of 2023!

(AND PA-LEEZE, do not tell me that in this case the IRS is overwhelmed and lacks personal power…if they are low on personal power, stop auditing the Lower Income and Middle-Class Income, and send those agents to the office that handles the WEALTHY FOLK!

Full disclosure, I am an American who is Jewish. I am an American who has been raised by my Jewish Parents, to reach out, include, understand, and find empathy within my Jewish community, and throughout my general community. It seems that the majority of policies, practices, and philosophies similar to my upbringing, collective experiences, and practical world interactions, during the years from my 20s to my current age of 73, find a home within the Democrat Party.

This is intended to protect a republic from becoming a de facto dictatorship. OKAY, so how is this CONCEPT not appropriate for Senators? Their monopoly is considerable, and mostly p[profitable for them and their Patron Puppet Masters!  Gerrymandered Districts, fuck the Supreme Court playing their part as Activist Judges, and find the backbone and courage, Congress in dismantling your rigged districts!

They all are horrible, life-threatening, dangerous, and frightening, BUT again is it just me, BUT these once-in-a-lifetime nature events seem to be happening about half a dozen times in my life…And Republicans and Capitalists, explain to me how THIS IS NOT ONE MORE WARNING about CLIMATE CHANGE? And oh yeah, I have to wonder who the Fascist Christian Nationalists will blame for this soon-to-be war on Christmas?

wondering why

 As 2022 is nearing its astrological end, I have to wonder, what is in store for those of us who actually were raised with empathy, grew up to become intelligent, actually liked ourselves not fear those who seem different, don’t use any Higher Power as a scapegoat to for hating, read history, believe in science, and actually think public education matters! 

It seems that being WOKE is somehow Evil as in Communist China evil (not Putin Communist evil, because he pays his GOP puppets too well and not the Communist Chinese who gave Ivanka more than a dozen trademarks). How come those of us who actually take pride in being WOKE, don’t insist that if you are not WOKE, you are DEAD?

 

It seems that somehow the GOP convinced enough voters to elect them to Congress because they and only they would be TOUGH ON CRIME. 10 YEARS AGO AND A DAY

 I was able to tell my kids I loved them, yesterday and today. I was able to hear about the new experiences in their lives today and yesterday. My kids were alive yesterday and remain alive today!

Marriage, Respect

Thank you, President Biden. I know you have been a champion for the LGBTQ community, and this bill helps. BUT President Biden as an American who among many attributes was born a Homosexual, I must say that the Respect for Marriage Act is similar to removing the White’s Only sign from hotels or bathrooms, because once inside both those in the churches still have the power to deny service. I thought the United States of America was founded on having no Government sanctioned religion.

 

The Respect for Marriage Act will not force states to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples but will require that people be considered married in any state as long as the marriage was valid in the state where it was performed. (Washington Post)

 I have always wondered, when was it too late to change the future. Kind of weird, but it has always been a concept in both my gut and mind.  A very easy example, for me, is our Climate. If we knew decades ago that the science was correct in explaining weather phenomenon, but choose to put off thinking about it, and by ignoring the facts, permitting climate to change, could we or should we have bitten the proverbial bullet, and said we must address then present to make certain there is actually a future? When EXXON Executives actually read the studies regarding the excess carbon output into the atmosphere, prioritizing profits over people, could they or should they have realized that even the generations of their families might suffer the same consequences as anyone they deemed as expandible humans? And the Tobacco producers, who had studies proving the dangers of cigarettes and smoking, what if they actually said, hmmm smoking does, not may lead to cancer?

 

I understand that for way too many uneducated, undereducated, never raised to understand empathy or sympathy, I need to identify an enemy to make me feel better about myself, THUGS, that HISTORY, presents nothing but the facts, and because of that is considered frightening, so they make a folly of it. But when the threat of Dictators, Authoritarianists, and Despots had occurred in the past, and almost all with the same amount of bigotry, hatred, and propaganda preceding them, when was the time to say STOP, LOOK, LISTEN?

I have never been detained in a Russian prison. Thank goodness no one I call a friend or family member has been detained in any Authoritarian Mad Man’s Regime. Brittney Griner was released, today. So, now my marriage to my husband is almost foolproof, and secure. As if Joe and I were second-class citizens, we had to wait for Congress to finally do almost the right thing and say Same-Sex Marriage is about 95% the same as Hetero-Marriage. I had been raised to understand that EQUALITY carries no caveats. That EQUALITY means IT EQUALS, as in it is the same as something else it is compared to. Look closely at the deal that had to be made with the National Christian Fascists identifying as Republicans. There is some bull shit about Christian rights, as government representatives to NOT have to facilitate Same-Sex Marriages. Weren’t we once founded as a nation without a National Religion? JUDGING

 Judge Aileen Cannon’s intrusive and unjustifiable reign over the Justice Department’s criminal investigation into Donald Trump is over. On Thursday, the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that Cannon had no jurisdiction to hear Trump’s complaint in the first place. (Vanity Fair)

The House Judiciary Committee announced on Thursday that it would hold a hearing on Dec. 8 to investigate the religious right lobbying campaign that led to the allegation that U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito leaked the outcome of his 2014 Hobby Lobby decision to its participants. (MSNBC)

Thomas has done it again. Last week the longest-serving justice on the nation’s highest court defied widespread calls from legal experts that he recuse himself from cases that have anything to do with the seditious events surrounding Jan. 6, 2021. You know, the failed coup in which Thomas’ wife, far-right political activist Virginia “Ginni” Thomas, was a participant. Worse, this latest case possibly implicates Ginni Thomas directly in what was an unprecedented attempt to thwart a peaceful transfer of power. (LA Times)

 

I BEG the question and BEG even harder for an answer. How is it that Justice has fallen from grace? I WANT to understand, I WISH to know, if those for whom the title Judge or Justice, seem as corrupt as the criminals who sit in their courtrooms, when will truth, honor, and adherence to laws ever HAPPEN?

 

I am not naïve enough to think that ONCE UPON A TIME, all JUDGES and JUSTICES were above board, less corrupt, and not politically motivated for the good of self, BUT somehow, along the way, the rot and ruin which may have been here and there, is INCREASING AND INCREASING.

 

What I see is the BAD, and what I do not see, is HOW TO rid the BAD and change it into GOOD!

Is This Me

 I was lucky. When I finally came out and freed myself from the burdens I placed on myself because I felt being a homosexual was a bad thing, I had somehow missed the pandemic of HIV-AIDS. In trying to understand who I was, I had been confronted with this awful “Gay Man’s cancer”, and truly wondered if in fact being Gay was a punishment from God. I believed and still believe in my God but did consider maybe God had certain plans for Homosexuals all the while I dealt with my own sexuality and being. 

 

I met people who had lovers, partners, and friends who died of HIV AIDS. I am good friends with many men who some thirty years later remain HIV positive. I heard stories, relived moments, and gleaned the heartaches, heartbreaks, and healing that so many in the LGBTQ community had to suffer, endure and accept. As the saying goes, I am “six degrees of separation” SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION: is the theory that any person on the planet can be connected to any other person on the planet through a chain of acquaintances that has no more than five intermediaries.

 

I am sad, that for so many decades I had to hide my fear of being myself, a male, among so many other natural phenomena as being a Homosexual. Finally free, finally stronger, I regret the time spent hiding, but have embraced the time of proudly saying THIS IS ME. It is World AIDS Day, a time to remind as well as remember that once upon a time, silence did equal death. And to insist, that whatever the cause of justice and equality, NEVER BE SILENT AGAIN!

 

In 1967, a very talented friend, named Danny Pickholtz and I wrote the opening number song to a play I wrote. The play and the song are called ‘Is This Me.’ Little did I realize I was writing about myself. Danny wrote the music, and I wrote the lyrics. We never produced it. I dedicate this song to all of the lives who never had a chance to live a long life and say, Is This Me!

Monarchy or Supreme

 While it claims to be a nonpartisan, neutral arbiter of the law,[ The Supreme Court], its conservative majority was deliberately cultivated to expand religious freedom for conservative Christians at the expense of the rights of those deemed less worthy of protection. (MSNBC)

Once again, a Justice of the Supreme Court, is in the news, for creating the news, and not for acting as an impartial Jurist. Justice Alito, a bible-thumping, conservative-leaning political figure, who somehow believes that the Founding Fathers, secretly did not intend this nation to have a divide between Church and State, had apparently confided to the Evangelical Christians associated with the Bring Back Christianity crowd at Hobby Lobby, by divulging the outcome of a closely watched religious freedom case, Burwell v. Hobby Lobby, in which the court held that private corporations can demand religious exemptions from the Affordable Care Act’s requirement that employer health plans cover contraceptives — this LEAK is the second from which both rulings were penned by Alito. The first was a leaked draft of the decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning the right to an abortion.

 I am SICK AND TIRED of this level of hypocrisy performed by the cadre of Christian Conservatives and honestly must wonder, how in the world the common citizen can survive the ever-flowing Tsunami of double standards! Sure there must be ways and means to stop this suicide of democracy, like creating a law that the Supreme Court Justices no longer serve a life term on that bench. The Supreme Court Justices actually do not have any other court from which enforcement of recusal can be mediated, as the Supreme Court is the highest court in our nation. This means there are currently NO other courts to keep a check and balance on the Supreme Court. Some higher authority needs to be implemented…or else the SUPREMES might as well be Monarchy!

 

 

MY MARRIAGE

Mike Lee (R-Utah) forced the upper chamber to delay a procedural vote on the bill this month until 10 p.m. after he was unable to win the necessary support for his amendment to further strengthen the religious liberty provisions. “They shouldn’t be able to punish religious belief,” Lee said on the Senate floor before the Nov. 16 vote. “That’s all I want. A protection saying the federal government may not punish any individual or entity based on a religious or moral conviction-based belief about marriage. That is not too much to ask.” (The Hill)

 

Fuck you, Mike Lee. You insist that somehow this NO NATIONAL OFFICIALRELIGIOUS NATION, has the power to create laws that won’t discriminate against Holy Rollers, but IT can and will discriminate against those for whom the RELIGIOUS ZEALOTS have a problem! Religious Liberty, as in some religions DICTATING their own PREJUDICES against those Americans for which our Constitution guaranteed liberty, and freedom? You are a Homophobe, plain and clear. And I wonder Mike Lee, as a Mormon, what about Interracial marriages?  Like other religious groups, Mormons have a complicated history around race. Until a few decades ago, the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints taught that they “shall be a white and a delightsome people,” a phrase taken from the Book of Mormon. Until the 1970s, the LDS Church also restricted black members’ participation in important rituals and prohibited black men from becoming priests (The Atlantic)

I am an American citizen. I am a Jewish religious American citizen. I am a Gay Male American citizen, and today, once again MY RIGHTS, MY DIGNITY, and MY CHOICES remain in JEOPARDY!

 It’s that Trump has always been desperate to send signals to his base of support that he agrees with and loves them. That his political instinct has always centered on stoking loyalty from his most energetic supporters, a tactic that helped him narrowly win the presidency in 2016. Others in the party, often worried about party primaries, adopted a similar policy of declining to confront Trump’s base, which is why the response to controversies has consistently been silence. Pick one, choose all, make your own selection, but whichever adjective you provide before the name of Trump, and at least 95%of our current crop of Republican Politicians, understand that Trump and his parade of Turd Collectors, are in their jobs, not for the good of the people, but for the welfare of themselves. 

 

I honestly have to wonder, are the current crop of Coup loving GOP politicians, so afraid of inciting the rage of the BASE OR, perhaps, MAYBE they do indeed share the Racist/Anti-Semitic/Homophobia/Misogynist/Bigotry embraced by TRUMP and his Minions?

Sports, as in Professional sports, should never meld into politics. Really! So athletes can promenade on a field wearing their version of their country’s colors sing their National Anthems wave their flags, and pretend that anti-LGBTQ, anti-women, anti-immigrant, anti-freedoms, and liberties are family secrets and nobody else’s business.

 

Becoming an Anti-Trump is now a righteous Republican quality. Really! He was a good guy acting as a wanna-be dictator. He encouraged Bigots, Racists, Xenophobes, Anti-Semites, and Homophobes to step forward and take priority. He incited a Coup attempt and motivated treasonists to overtake the Capitol. But that was cool, and he was cooler. Except when too many loons didn’t win their elections, so suddenly being anti-Trump is the right-wing thing to do.

 

Jews, LGBTQ Latins, and African Americans in America are free to vote Republican. Really! Let me guess, it’s all about the Benjamin, and the economy somehow (pardon the pun) trumps morals and ethics. Let me guess, religion as in the Jews think the Evangelicals are better friends of Israel, the Latins, and the African Americans can be disgusted with the un-Christian-like actions of the LGBTQ and the upper financial echelon of LGBTQ are more invested in their Capitalistic material well-being than equality.

 

Crime is real. Really! Which crimes are we speaking of. The crimes are only in urban areas, of course not in rural towns. Not the crimes each time a State Legislature creates politically gerrymandered districts. Not the crimes of lying about election results and threatening the Poll Workers. Not the crimes of participating in a COUP. Not the crimes of a tax system that only seems to Trickle Up.

 

Hypocrisy is all around us. Bullshit lounges on the ground from which politicians walk. And way too many of us prefers to look away. Perhaps But then please no longer.
