And then I wondered how the kids of this year might NEVER know any form of normalcy! The seasons no longer are in sets of four/Democracy has morphed in Fascism/Medicine and Science have become a political tool and FACTS are no longer relevant/History is now a TABOO subject to study/Religion no longer concerns itself with morals or values (The Evangelical Christians embrace an adulterer, love them a grifter, a glutton, a greedy goon as an example)/The idea of personal freedoms is more about selfishness, and the definition of a community is exemplified by too bad if you get the virus from/I will take my gun wherever I want to, and the ever-perfect quote of a three or four years old, “…YOU ARE NOT THE BOSS OF ME…” And then I stopped and said aloud, (again to our dog Chance) does any of this have a happy ending?

My Aunt Meercy always received invitations for movie premiers and would always get Movie Passes for all movie theaters in the Greater Pittsburgh area. AND, when the lead actors would actually come to Pittsburgh to smile, sigh, and emote for the public, you bet my Aunt Meercy was front and center, and she brought her favorite nephew (ME) along as her date! On this particular PREMIER for Around the World in 80 Days, I actually met David Niven, but more importantly, met Shirley MacLaine who kissed me on my right cheek, (I remember this because Ms. MacLaine’s more photogenic side was her right-side side) The movie was filmed in CINEMA-SCOPE a widescreen interactive technique, and back in the day, we could watch what seemed to be a 3D, movie, wider, bigger, and bolder than we ever imagined. I loved the movie, and wondered then, what it might be like to travel the ENTIRE WORLD in just 80 days. I mean, back then this WORLD seemed mighty, MIGHTY, and faraway places were to dream about!

 

This morning, my ACCU-WEATHER App, sent me a weather advisory for Cape Cod. The people at the ACCU WEATHER headquarters, wanted we New Englanders to prepare for UNHEALTHY AIR-QUALITY. The unhealthy/do not stay outside if you have any respiratory condition/your lungs will grow grey and narcoleptic WARNING, informed us that FINALLY, the same UNBREATHABLE AIR that the entire Pacific Coast had to endure, and still must worry about, found its way in the jet stream, and is settling in on the East Coast. Fool Mother Nature

 The gray outside is in a monotone pattern. I know the arc of the horizon and can vaguely distinguish, the sky from the ground, but on this day, it takes a bit more imagination and tons of squinting to do so! Had I really studied the various types of clouds, I am certain, if this was a game of Jeopardy, there would be at least an entire category based on my sky, in North Truro, and I could say, “YUP, seen it been there and those clouds are real!” Thank goodness, the green, amounting to the same variety of trees as there are clouds, helps me notice that I am walking on the ground and somehow not floating in space. (But then again, on this kind of overcast, rain falling in drizzles, and patches, perhaps floating in space is appropriate, or just settling in on the couch and watching movies filmed in black and white, with a soundtrack consisting of strings and woodwinds)

 

Summer on the Cape has been a little weird. I suppose, based on my past 71 years of summer, this one stands out the most, due to the erratic and almost unpredictable choice of temperatures, weighty humidity, and chaotic, almost schizophrenic, changes in mood, Mother Nature is demonstrating… (She might actually be pissed off, and as in the 1970’s commercial for Chiffon Margarine, “It’s Not Nice To Fool Mother Nature” …), SHE can upend all we know. OR in OUR case, as humans living in the year 2021, Mother Nature, just might be saying, “YOU ASKED FOR IT, NOW ENJOY IT!” 

 

Moody and melancholy are great adjectives to consider when the ratta tat-tat of the rain bestows the listener to a symphony of horns and acoustical guitar and piano. Hard to tap your toe to, but if you remain quiet the sound beckons as might the siren of a mermaid, (the peaceful kind, who wishes to guide you home, not to HELL!). Thoughts are free to ruminate, maybe romanticize inside your head. The swear words, I could swear were bad words, were FAKATA, and SHONDA. My little sister and I would giggle when we happened to pass by my Grandma, and she would furiously mover her hands, full of animation, contort her face, so tightly that once finished speaking she would have to reapply her red rouge, and with just the amount pf spittle to fall like a light misty sprinkle of rain, somewhere in her sentence, my Grandma would refer to someone or something as FAKATA, and end her sentence making a dour and misshapen face, as her upper lip and lower lip became ONE lip, and hiss, “and what a SHONDA!”

 

My little sister and I would run to my mother and tell on our Grandma, asking why she could swear, and we could not (even though we actually had no idea what a swear word was, and why one would use it! We’d say the word we heard, and my mother would look at us using her mystery voice (the kind of voice in which when we asked what we were getting as a gift for our birthdays, she would answer, ‘BIRTHDAY, WHOSE BIRTHDAY’.

It was a safe HAVEN when the sun shined, because, once again, we all knew, as kids, that any creature or monster of good standing slept during the day! But once dusk approached and our mothers would call us in for dinner, the backyard was to be left alone. (We figured that it was a SHARABLE SPACE, daytime kids playground, and nighttime, WHATEVER otherworldly THINGS dwelled there, could have it!

 

My room had very thin curtains, the kind that might as well have been nothing but gauze and see-through material. My mother insisted that the moonlight could act as a night light, and seeing the stars was calming. What MY MOTHER did not understand, was that the CREATURES living behind or even IN the garages, did not like being disturbed, and even more, could and would come after you if they even presumed you were watching them. AND MY MOTHER and FATHER had no idea, that OUR backyard was a perfect place for “FLYING SAUCERS”, to not only land but to kidnap the kids who watched them land! How did I KNOW this…SIMPLE…the SCIENCE FICTION THEATER on Channel 2 in Pittsburgh, on Saturday night at 10:30, had way too many programs which reminded us, WE ARE NOT ALONE. (My parents knew I had an imagination, they never wanted to stifle it, and would permit me to watch these ‘SILLY SHOWS” and did warn me that sometimes too much of an imagination can take you to places you might want to avoid. Oftentimes, I would challenge my bravery on those very stary nights, and peek through the curtains (I never looked at the garages, because I WAS certain of what lived there…BUT I looked at the sky, and I swear to this day, I saw “Flying Saucers”, but I was smart enough to NEVER let them see me watching!

 

IMAGINATION/SCIENCE FICTION/MAKE BELIEVE/ all of that still my childhood memories, all of that once upon a time…but as a 71-year-old man, SADLY, the horrors I see now in my life, are not of monsters, or creatures, or ghosts or aliens, NO, they are too much more frightening, they are REAL PEOPLE, who don’t go away when the sun shines, or the TV is turned off. I HAVE BECOME SCARED AGAIN!

 

The Day The Climate Changed

 By now in the newly released movie The Day The Climate Changed, the very handsome, but arrogant self-made businessman Capitalist turned Philanthropist, and the female scientist, (of course buxom because a smart lady should always have large breasts) have clashed and confronted one another, only to realize that working together, they JUST MIGHT BE ABLE TO SAVE THE WORLD. It is about one hour into the two-hour movie, and we have already met the older scientist, who hates computers uses a notepad and has been soured by the blatant bureaucracy of the government!  There is the janitor of Mexican descent, who until now has been overlooked and seemingly dismissed as just a brown-skinned person who is too loud and noisy and gets in the way of the OFFICIAL OFFICIALS…Of course, the young black kid who is an intern wears glasses, because only black people who are smart wear glasses…the children of the Female Scientist who have grown jealous that their mother could not be both a mother and a scientist…and of COURSE, the DREADED CEO who has his own cadre of missiles, jet fighters, and amazing helicopters.

 

 The camera cuts to scenes of Droughts, Fires, Flooding, Food Shortages, and general CHAOS, with people acting as REAL PEOPLE would, demanding that it NO LONGER TAKES A VILLAGE, and it is every man and woman for themselves. We then pan into a Senate Office, where the Villainous CEO has a clandestine meeting with a few Senators, and REMINDS THEM, that HE, owns them and their futures. “Just one more deep-water drilling in the Arctic,” he shouts, adding “Don’t worry about your families, they will ride on my new space ship and wait on the moon, until the PEONS either die out of growing tired of GROWING TIRED! Now with 10 minutes left, the kids, the Intern, the Janitor, the Older Scientist, the Female Scientist, and the now TOTALLY REFORMED arrogant ex-Capitalist find a clue from the Space Aliens, and the world is saved. As the credits begin we watch the EVIL CEO, and his Puppet Politicians carted off to Space, by the ALIENS.

 It was October 21, 1961, when the Rabbi of Hebrew Institute, informed my family and I that on November 7 of 1962, Hersh Wolf (ME…my Hebrew Name) would become a Bar Mitzvah. Oy thought I, a whole year of Hebrew School, a full year of Bar Mitzvah lessons, and God only knew the expectations that might arise once I became a MAN. Hebrew Institute was located on the corner of the street upon which we lived. Our family was far from an Orthodox practicing Jewish Family, but location, location, location, and a Membership well below those of other Temples or Congregations, made The Hebrew Institute the perfect place for the Buncher Family, and in particular the Prince of the Buncher Family…soon to be King…ME. (Back in the day, a son a grandson was a prized procession, because back in the day, a male child, was THE ONE to carry on the lineage, the purity, the prestige of the LAST NAME.) Of course, I played the Prince, soon-to-be King role very well, but actually hated the pressure of Royalty!

 

I remember clearly, my parents sharing this Jewish News with me. A Bar Mitzvah, a soon-to-be a man, a coming of age…all fell within the parameters of the late ’50s and early ’60s (always stay between the lines and NEVER use crayon on the white space). I also remember my parents telling me, soon, I would start a growth spurt. They both recalled stories from the ages (Not certain which ages) of short boys, erupting like a volcano into tall adolescents; one day actually lying in bed wondering where their legs went because they had grown so tall, their lower limbs hung over the mattress! Even my own father a hulking man of 6’1 mentioned he too was amazed as to how fast he had grown between his 12^th and 13^thyear of life. I BELIEVED none of this. I knew kids that grew tall, BUT they were already tall, so getting taller was no big ACT OF NATURE, just a continuum of NATURE. I was 5’4”. I was always in the front row for class pictures as we stood on the stage and the photographer would announce that the short kids move aside for the tall kids to stand on the bleachers. I remember, the teachers always announcing the same kid's names, telling us we too SOME DAY, would get to stand on the bleachers. (Back then I knew the term BULL SHIT, but never quite understood its depth and TRUE interpretation of a moment when all truth was actually TRUE LIES)

 

I read the news today (Yep, I put myself through that agony…thinking just do it, get it over with). And once again the LIES fall as might acid rain, nuclear radiation, or the smothering change of the climate. There is less truth being told, and more insistence that somehow what is NATURAL, will be ignored. Trump lost…the GQP hates democracy…the vaccination works…teach history because we learn nothing by ignoring it… I did grow taller, but not for my Bar Mitzvah (I needed a step stool to read the Torah) Finally when I entered High School I was a whopping 5’7”. But like having brown eyes, brown hair, being Gay, I was supposed to be 5’7” eventually!

Arkansas has new legislation regarding COVID-19. Act 1030 prohibits state and local authorities from using a vaccine passport or documentation that a person has been vaccinated against COVID-19. This becomes law July 27, and it does not impact businesses that can still make their own decisions on whether to require vaccines. Act 1002 bans local governments from mandating face masks although businesses still can. This also takes effect on July 27. Act 977 prohibits the state from mandating COVID-19 vaccines. It’ll remain in effect two years after FDA approval for the vaccines. Missouri Gov. Mike Parson enacted a new law Tuesday limiting the duration of local public health restrictions and barring governments from requiring proof of COVID-19 vaccination to use public facilities and transportation. “Then next time we do get in a crisis, we’re going to have a little bit more safeguards for the general public to make sure they have more transparency and more of a voice in the process,” he said.

There is one abortion clinic in Missouri. You can get an abortion up to 22 weeks, and past if the woman's health is in jeopardy. In 1900, Missouri criminalized abortion. Currently, abortion is legal in Arkansas for up to 20 weeks of gestation. Conjoined twins are two babies who are born physically connected to each other. Conjoined twins develop when an early embryo only partially separates to form two individuals. Although two fetuses will develop from this embryo, they will remain physically connected — most often at the chest, abdomen, or pelvis. (Wikipedia). I remember growing up and hearing stories about twins CONJOINED, seeing videos, and listening as parents both hopeful and worried, speak about what they feel is right or wrong, good, or bad, natural or unnatural regarding keeping both children cojoined OR, making a decision to separate them. As a PARENT myself, I understand often times the feeling that HAVING TO PLAY GOD, is both a blessing and a curse! 

 

As we find ourselves ALREADY in the seventh month of the year 2021, I somehow find myself confused as to the EXACT time stamp in which we live. For me, 2021 seems an ominous extension of 2020, as if both years are CONJOINED, with perhaps 2020, the sicker year, and 2021 ailing from that ILLNESS. I am still exhausted from the torment and trials and tribulations of 2020 and having wished and hoped the year 2021 could or would be better, am overwhelmed with angst and anxiety, that the prevailing diseases of, BIGOTRY…RACISM…IGNORANCE…TREASON…HATE…CONSPIRACY…SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PHOBIAS…were never eradicated, rather reinforced…made stronger, and more virulent! For me, the calendar HAD stopped moving into the future, and IT decided to remain in a Dark and Dreary, and Dangerous Era. Conjoined Twins, the years 2020 and 2021, and somehow I want both to just go away!

Having No idea

 It was a dark and stormy afternoon. HUH! I like the sound of that…let me continue…It had been a gloomy blustery overloaded with grey skies, bumping into one another, trying to reach the horizon to expel bucket loads of nasty wet weather, KIND of a soggy humid, moody let's watch black and white movies on television afternoon…(As an aside, when I was a mopey adolescent living in Pittsburgh on the rare occasions no one was in the house on a weekend day, I would find a comfy sofa, use one of my grandmother's hand-sewn afghans as a blanket, lie down and watch a movie filmed in black and white, and linger longingly in a land of shapeless colors.) Summer was here (BUT it was not time to dance in the streets as the Martha and the Vandellas song prescribed) and I decided to escape to a place I hoped I would never find myself stuck in, but a place I often wondered about! Confusing, perhaps, but to translate into non-Gerry thinking, I escaped to the place where WHAT IF MOVIES found domicile, and disaster and doomsday were the common denominators. I have always had a creative imagination, and supposed and thought, EXACTLY HOW WOULD I REACT (or better yet…ACT,) if a Zombie Apocalypse…a Football Shaped Meteor…an Attack of Mutant Mushrooms…or An Alien Invasion actually became real! So I watched a marathon of War of the World movies, beginning with the 1953 version (Gene Barry, loved it!) 2005 version (Tom Cruise, hated him but loved the special effects) and the TV series (MEH). I was on Season Two of the TV series, when Joe came home from work, caught me binging, and said…” I thought you saw this and hated it…”

 

Joe then added, “…Honey, You, know how pissed off you get when all the remaining humans begin to act as bad as the BAD MONSTERS, or CREATURES. You know how you make all of this into a confirmation begging the question, who ACTUALLY should we FEAR…” He was correct, and yet each time I watch an END OF THE WORLD movie, I still naïvely hope that this time, HUMANKIND will use their hearts and souls, conscience, and grace to solve the crisis, instead of preferring the adage, KING OF THE HILL!

 

I write this BLOG, because there is an APOCALYPTIC scenario being churned like the poison in a Witch’s Cauldron, and ALL of us are witnessing it, and much to my chagrin, as is USUALLY the case in the RUN FOR YOUR LIFE movies, most of us are either snickering over it, ignoring it, or just looking at it as we might as we are about to hit the deer on the road, and our headlights warn us, but we crash anyway! Trump is a fool, but he is a fool with a BRIGADE of Buffoons, who will follow his foolish ways…AND Trump is swearing that in AUGUST he will be reinstated to the office of President…I know he won’t, you know he won’t…BUT the LEMMINGS who brought US the INSURRECTION on JANUARY 6^th HAVE NO IDEA HE WON’T!

Once again, the news is concentrating on the CONSPIRACY THEORISTS, the MAGA SPITEFUL, the FOX and FIENDS like (Carlson/Graham/Hannity/and Levin DEMANDING DEATH BY COVID IS A PROGRESSIVE PLOT, the IDIOT RELIGIOUS SNAKE OIL SALESPEOPLE, insisting JESUS (The Caucasian one born either in Massachusetts or Utah), is telling ALL of the PAY TO PRAY HACKS, that YOU the GULLIBLE, should only pay attention to their DEMANDS THAT YOU DIE INSTEAD OF BECOMING A COMMUNIST OR SOCIALIST, once vaccinated…WE ALL, must, ONCE AGAIN, be concerned, or is it CONSUMED by the Cavalier, the Contagious, the Callous. Back in my younger years, when the more Red, White, and Blue, you had displayed in your front yard or porch, was a TRUE sign of LOVING AMERICA, and flags GALORE was the symbol of all American Patriotism, and God Bless America, seemed as if it had been written in the Constitution…come the Fourth of July a special presentation of the 1942 movie Yankee Doodle Dandy would be played on TV, and most families watched it as if THAT TOO, was a sign of how much you loved your country. Back in those days, my Dad, being a Sargent of Police for the Squirrel Hill Precinct, would enlist his other Police buds, along with the Jewish War Veterans, and walk the neighborhoods, carrying dozens of 24” mini flags, planting each of them on the front lawns of almost every home. On the Fourth, ALL retail stores were closed, as well as bars (somehow, no matter which day of the week the 4^th fell, it was like a Sunday in Pittsburgh, and treated like a religious holy day), and neighborhoods HELD parades. My father was responsible for the safety of the Parade Participants as well as the Spectators in Squirrel Hill, (as I remember the real fear was that someone would set off handheld SPARKLERS, and as Grandma’s always cautioned someone’s finger would fall off causing chaos.) The parades took more time to begin than actually PARADE through the neighborhood, but at the time it made everyone FEEL PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN, and to HATE THOSE COMMUNISTS AND DICTATORS! Back in my younger years, growing up in the 1950s, as I have often stated, things were simple…there was good OR bad…there was right OR wrong…there was black OR white…

In the year 2021, as we celebrate a holiday which NOW seems to have a confusing meaning to it I just read the following: On the final day of June, House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy gave us an extraordinary display of what he and the Republican Party have become. On the same day that McCarthy voted against a Committee to investigate the Jan. 6 insurrection, he demanded an investigation into Fox News Host Tucker Carlson’s baseless and paranoid charge that the National Security Agency was reading his emails. (MSNBC) Got to wonder what the fuck Uncle Sam is thinking about his NATION, NOW!

 

 

gloom and doom

 The gloom of the weekend on the Cape, has extended its stay, no reservations made, but like the plot in the 1942 movie, The Man Who Came To Dinner, the gray of the sky above has blended too perfectly with the horizon, almost making the best QAnon Conspiracists happy that in fact the Earth just might BE Flat, and this wet, dismal, dreary, weather system remains a permanent unnerving and nagging guest. No complaints about the rain, as I only wish somehow the climate could change and spread the much-needed downpour to the West. But somehow with the adverse reaction by Mother Nature toward human consumption of too much carbon energy, pillaged from eons gone by, the rain does not seem to trickle down on the lands which are thirsty, but like the Ronnie Reagan campaign to reward the wealthy, this TRICKLE DOWN ECOSYSTEM is similar to RONNIE’S failed TRICKLE DOWN ECONOMY which seemed to never, EVER water the pockets of the poor!

 

I woke up to a drizzle, having lived in LA for the past decade, the drip-drop harmony of rain hitting our deck, and clashing against the windows was a kind of a once remembered symphony (from my childhood in Pittsburgh), melodic but almost melodramatic at the same time. I forgot how, at times the color GRAY can actually UNSTIMULATE (not certain that IS a word, but it sure is an emotion for me) and INSULATE my mood with a blanket of Negative, making for DISMAL AND DULL seeking priority and purpose! And then as the Beatles once wrote, ‘I Read the News Today…Oh Boy…”

 

…The post blame game of selfish, and greed regarding the condo collapse…A second Tour of the Insurrectionist and Enemy of the State…Wildfires and secret papers regarding the priority of EXXON to provide its Shareholders with profits, and letting the Earth die…More words than action as we pretend the legal system is NOT rigged, and The Trump Mob Family and Mob Business remain free…Vaccine stupidity still haunts this nation, as the most unintelligent pretend COVID is still a piece of propaganda by Progressives, and somehow the rest of us still encourage them not to commit suicide…Fireworks are debated as if the more glorious and glamorous the display of strontium carbonate (red fireworks), calcium chloride (orange fireworks), sodium nitrate (yellow fireworks), barium chloride (green fireworks), and copper chloride (blue fireworks), the MORE Patriotic we become, even those who stormed the Capitol…SOMEDAYS, just seem like ticking time bombs, caution and careful are necessary and one sudden move might be a cause of a WHAM BAM, NO THANK YOU MA’AM…and today seems like one of them for me!

 

Thunder and Summer

 Back in the day, (and now I have to admit those days have become years and those years DECADES), when summertime tossed around the hot humid air of Pittsburgh in July and August, and the kids on our street played outside from sunrise to the bright beacons of the streetlights shedding their yellowish alarm, that day is done, and monsters may soon appear; life was full of our IMAGINATION, limitless and lingering. Few restrictions, for the kids on our block, as long as we stayed within shouting distance, to be reminded it was lunchtime, move out of the way if one of the older neighbors was trying to pass by, and be careful of the one or two really awful drivers who lived on our street because they unintentionally could run you over. Time never existed back then, in the form of exact hours; more so in which new game would we play, and whose turn was it to be the boss. (We had the BIG kids, my contemporaries, and our younger siblings…the LITTLE kids and the rules were simple, the BIG kids chose the game and one of them was the boss). The only exception to ANY summer day was the advent of a Pittsburgh summer-time THUNDERSTORM. Every morning, our TV sets would be tuned onto KDKA, (black and white TV back then) some parent would listen to the Weather Man in the morning (Yep no women allowed to talk about cumulus clouds in the 1950s), then call the other parents and decide how safe it might be to play outside. FEAR THE THUNDERSTORM was a prevalent and common ailment for the mothers on our street. The thing about Pittsburgh and summer and storms back then was, WE could actually smell the rain in the air as if it was a 20-minute warning that a REALLY OMINOUS run for cover deluge was on its way! 

 

I write about BACK IN THE DAY, because, TODAY, the skies in North Truro, are clicking and clacking with gusts of wind seemingly churning the bulky, bad-ass clouds and moving them as if they were doing a Square Dance. If the wind was not so loud, I imagine I could hear the clouds making the same noise as a Pin Ball Machine. I was walking our dog, Chance, and a sudden sense of smell, approached my nostrils almost addressing my brain at the same time, saying, remember when this happened way too many years ago, and you knew it was NOW or NEVER to seek shelter. Summer, Thunder, Lightning, Rain, Humidity, made sense THAN, but somehow NOW, I wonder what kind of sense WE will make as the Climate Changes?

 

Too much to worry about I suppose, from ANARCHY, TREASON, INSURRECTION, BIGOTRY, RACISM, POLITICS OF DECEIT, GRIFFTING, and GRAFT in GOVERNMENT… all of that is enough to bring on angst, anger, and anxiety…BUT now, right in our faces and for many, either their heat-soaked and stroked bodies, or water-logged living spaces, CLIMATE CHANGE has already changed our days and nights…BUT somehow, all we do is still talk about it…when in FACT…SOMETHING REALLY OMINOUS is on its way!
