“Slowly I Turned”, The skit, which was well known on the vaudeville circuit, goes something like this: A bedraggled man buttonholes a stranger and tells him a tale of betrayal and vengeance. A rogue seduced his sweetheart. He trailed the miscreant from town to town, finally catching up with him in Niagara Falls, where he pummeled him mercilessly. The hearer of the story haplessly says the magic words, "Niagara Falls," causing the man to turn on him and mete out the same punishment. Where'd that come from? Some remember it as an old Abbott and Costello or Three Stooges routine. Others may recall it from an episode of I Love Lucy. They're all right.
The skit, “Slowly I Turned”, which is a well known Washington DC White House/Trump/GOP Leadership act on the American public circuit goes something like this: A deranged Commander-In-Chief insists he has never colluded with laundered money with nor met with anyone Russian. He feigns innocence while ll the while insisting to his Attorney General to play every conceivable roadblock into discovering and fact or truth THAT INDEED he the Commander-In-Chief DID break a variety of US laws. The Attorney General, himself on record for lying under oath finds himself in a very precarious situation, always the brunt of a burned out sociopath, permits his cronies, the leadership of the GOP, to pretend that the nation of Russia never really existed and that in fact anyone Russian is only the figment of the imagination’s of the sore losers from the 2016 Presidential Campaign. “Step by Step, inch by inch”…as the skit continues, the Republicans begin their act of treason against both the American public and the American Constitution. It is as if we ALL in a parody of political madness whose conclusion is only the death of democracy leading to the direction of a dictator, authoritarian government.
Originally, whether it was Abbott and Costello, Lucy or the Three Stooges, the “Slowly I Turned” skit was funny. Watching a sane person suddenly turn crazy, usually made us laugh. But NOW watching a crazy man turn even more bizarre, witnessing a group of politicians placing self interest and party before Country is bewildering. Sitting back helplessly as the Checks and Balances become bogus and broken, is frightening. I beg enough already…For me, all I hear is “Slowly I Turned this nation into nothing but a Fascist/Authoritarian State where freedom and equality are only provided to the wealthy. We must turn against the real enemies of the state, sooner than later!
