no room for tyranny

“There is no week nor day nor hour when tyranny may not enter upon this country, if the people lose their roughness and spirit of defiance. There is no crueler tyranny than that which is perpetuated under the shield of law and in the name of justice. Beauty is a short-lived tyranny.”/(Walt Whitman)

The inspector general for the Department of Labor, Scott Dahl, announced Tuesday that he plans to retire from his position in a few weeks, adding to the spate of government watchdogs recently leaving their roles.
His announcement came a day after Dahl told lawmakers on a House oversight subcommittee that his office has seen a "significant amount of fraud" in unemployment programs during the coronavirus epidemic, according to Politico. The report said that Dahl was also surprised that the Occupational Safety and Health Administration issued only one citation during the crisis so far.

“'Mom, you wouldn't even believe it. These people were demonstrating peacefully. And all of a sudden, this barrage of security came through using clubs to beat people and these explosive scat little bullets that explode into stuff that burns your eyes,” Alexandra Pelosi “What is this, a banana republic?” Nancy Pelosi added.
Republican senators struggled Tuesday to address President Donald Trump's harsh response to peaceful protesters who gathered outside the White House on Monday night, with many dodging questions about whether the tactics were too much or amounted to an abuse of power that infringed on people's First Amendment rights. “I didn't really see it,” said Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., when asked about the events of Monday night. “I’m late for lunch,” said Sen. Rob Portman, R-Ohio. “I don’t have a comment,” said Sen. Pat Roberts, R-Kan.

Retired Navy Adm. Mike Mullen, a former chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, accused President Trump Tuesday of disrespecting the right to protest and potentially politicizing the military. "It sickened me yesterday to see security personnel — including members of the National Guard — forcibly and violently clear a path through Lafayette Square to accommodate the president's visit outside St. John's Church," wrote Mullen, who served as America's highest-ranking military officer from October 2007 through September 2011. “WE CAN NO LONGER REMAIN SILENT…BECAUSE THE SILENCE WILL COLLECT IN OUR LUNGS AND CHOKE US TO DEATH, ALONG WITH OUR FREEDOMS!”/(Gerry Buncher)
