One of Donald Trump’s top vice-presidential prospects has revealed she killed a family dog on a hunting trip.
In a forthcoming memoir, Kristi Noem, the South Dakota governor, wrote how she threw Cricket, a 14-month-old female wirehaired pointer, into a gravel pit and executed it with a gun after concluding the dog was “untrainable”. Noem cited the killing of the pet dog as an example of her readiness to take on unpleasant tasks in the polarised world of US politics in her book No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward.
“I hated that dog,” she wrote. “It was not a pleasant job but it had to be done. And after it was over, I realised another unpleasant job needed to be done.”
Noem said she then shot her “disgusting, musky, rancid” pet goat in the same gravel pit. (The Times/The Sunday Times)
