A fallout shelter is an enclosed space specially designed to protect occupants from radioactive debris or fallout resulting from a nuclear explosion. Many such shelters were constructed as civil defense measures during the Cold War. During a nuclear explosion, matter vaporized in the resulting fireball is exposed to neutrons from the explosion, absorbs them, and becomes radioactive. When this material condenses in the rain, it forms dust and light sandy materials that resembles ground pumice.The fallout emits alpha and beta particles as well as gamma rays. Much of this highly radioactive material falls to earth, subjecting anything within the line of sight to radiation, becoming a significant hazard. A fallout shelter is designed to allow its occupants to minimize exposure to harmful fallout until radioactivity has decayed to a safer level…In Pittsburgh during the 50’s and early 60’s each Monday at noon, we would hear the air raid sirens…they were a test, first to make sure the sirens could be activated, and secondly to remind ALL of us the kind of world in which we were living and to always be vigilant.
The government wanted to remind us, that we could be safe if we took the right precautions. The science regarding surviving a world after a nuclear holocaust was really not shared with the public, because doing so, just might cause millions of people to give up hope, knowing they would die a very painful and miserable death from radiation poisoning. Thus, in public schools we would duck and cover, or on the main thoroughfares we would take heed of the Fallout Shelters and find safety a few below the earth. The initial blast would be devastating, we were were told, but we are human’s and with gut and gumption we WOULD survive the aftermath. Except, as science later pointed out, with less hysteria and actual facts, the aftermath was and would be a dismal landscape for all living creatures. America needed to be strong, especially against the Russians, we were preached at, only the Russians and their uneducated/uncultured/heathen society could pose a threat, but WE are America, and we DO Prevail!
HMMM! The Russians, have decided to plant a different kind of bomb on the shores of America, the Beautiful. Those scoundrels with their uneducated/uncultured/heathen society, candled, caressed and created a monster bomb called Trump. Of course like any nuclear weapon of mass destruction the initial blast was devastating. The immediacy of the damage was witnessed. But like America of the 50’s and 60’s we were sure, once the bomb fell, we COULD/WOULD survive. And just like America of 50’s and 60’s we pretended that even with the radiation all around us, we could pick ourselves up from the preverbal boot straps and return to normalcy. WRONG…the TRUMP bomb was detonated by the Russians, the explosion cause casualties, but worse then that IS the particles of radiation which will infect this nation for generations upon generations. BOOM!
