Hale and hardy, the men in uniforms met in the arena minus the Lions but still a few Christians, facing off in a game founded on the idea rough and rugged is a part of the tapestry of the United States. Half time in which the warriors could strategize a performer sang, gyrated, proclaimed we are all the same and that difference is what makes life even better. She was surrounded by dancers who may or may not have been, as she sang, “Born This Way”, perhaps a member of the LGBT community of not. Audience members consisting of myriads of skin color held candles illuminating the hope and light for all of our lights to shine. Hokey, maybe, full of glitz and shine, of course, but on an unofficial holiday like Super Bowl, an easy remedy for that touch of warmth as if the entire Super Bowl was a pot of homemade stew brewing and breathing, calling for cozy and calm.
All of this extravaganza took place in a very gerrymandered state, a very red state, Texas, whose current Republican leadership, Gregg Abbott/Ken Paxton/Ted Cruz/John Cornyn/and past dancing with the stars Governor Rick Perry have come to power with the understanding that hate, bias, bigotry all wrapped up in Christianity, using Jesus Christ as their scapegoat for their own inadequacies, is all that is necessary to lie to the citizens of Texas. All of these men have decided, also, that anything Trump does or says can be pardoned, because, as long there is a Trump repressive Republican control, any bit of freedom and equality, can and will be smothered diminishing any spark of a democratic nation.
As is the usual custom, the entire night began with the singing of the National Anthem, some people wondered would the Players ‘take a knee’, they did not and many of the same people so worried about the Players taking a knee, were relieved, as if the mere motion of holding one’s heart standing at attention is ALL we need to make America whole. And as most of America sighed a “yuuuge’ bit of relief because the American Way did not seem tarnished even as a man is sitting in the Oval Office, praising anyone Russian, destroying anyone not like he or his henchmen, tearing the Constitution to shreds. So, the question becomes whose America is it anymore!
