Anthropic was right not to trust Pete Hegseth. The AI company's redlines asked very little of the Pentagon. Their rejection showed how little the Defense Department should be trusted with AI. Anthropic, which was founded over concerns about the lack of safeguards at other AI startups like OpenAI, is one of the few companies in the AI space calling for more federal regulation over the emerging technology. It’s telling then that OpenAI swooped in soon after Anthropic’s unceremonious dumping to fill the vacuum, despite pledging to (somehow) prevent the Pentagon from abusing its technology.
How does it affect us? It seems that the Pentagon, under the leadership of Hegseth and his Führer Trump, was looking for an autonomous mechanism to decide who and what it might attack, maim, or murder. Most autocratic Banana Republics, to maintain their dictatorships and no need for a democratic stance in governing, enjoy the luxury of hunting down their paranoid perception of enemies, not of the state, but people who do not want an authoritarian government. Heir Trump and Field Marshal Hegseth have no time for decency, law or order, and both understand that fear, scapegoating, and intimidation by man or machine is the only way for their corrupt power to remain. The CEO, Dario Amodei, felt that human controls over AI is essential to remain free.
“There need to be limits to what we allow our governments to do with AI, so that they don’t seize power or repress their own people. The formulation I have come up with is that we should use AI for national defense in all ways except those which would make us more like our autocratic adversaries.” (CEO Dario Amodei-Anthropic)
In brief, Amodei named two major redlines for Claude’s use (Anthropic AI): conducting mass surveillance domestically and developing autonomous weapons — or weapons that don’t need a human to operate them. The Pentagon says it doesn’t intend to do either of those things — but also won’t let someone else say that it can’t.
Read that closely, the liars within the Trump Tribe of eternal liars state that they would NEVER, EVER use anything for either domestic surveillance or weapons of mass destruction, but NEVER, EVER tell anyone Trump, you cannot do that!
