The GOP-controlled Virginia House of Delegates defeated the nomination of Tracy Thorne-Begland, Richmond's chief deputy commonwealth's attorney, the Richmond Times-Dispatch reports.
Virginia state Del. Bob Marshall (R) has launched an effort to block an openly Gay judge from being considered for a post on a general district court.
Marshall said he believes that Tracy Thorne-Begland, a Richmond-based prosecutor who lives with his partner and two adopted children, should be removed from the list of potential appointees. Thorne-Begland's sexual orientation would conflict with his ability to hold up the state's constitution, Marshall said. (HuffPost)
The Gay “thing,” we are told is a diversion by the Democrats to avoid talking about the economy. The Republican/Tea Party pundits, politicians, have made a concerted effort to chisel away at the civil rights of select demographics of the nation. But when they (Republicans/Tea Party) are caught in the act insist a mountain has been made out of a meaningless molehill. Continuous actions to deny, marriage, adoption, employment for the LGBT and now a nomination of a Gay person, are assaults on freedoms and equality. If you can not live free and thrive as an equal partner to other Americans, the economy has very little meaning to your life.
Not too far ago in the history of the US, Jewish doctors were not permitted to practice in certain hospitals. There were even deed restrictions in many neighborhoods which read no Jews, Blacks, Catholics or Dogs. In the life time of Americans living today, Blacks could only ride in the back of the bus, use separate water fountains, attend separate schools. In recent history a women’s role was to stay at home as chattel to a man, and if she did have to work, being a nurse, a teacher, or a secretary was all she was talented to do. And if the woman had aspirations there was no way in the world her time and talent was worth the same compensation as a man doing the same job.
And from the pulpits of ministers who with a Bible in one hand and their middle finger pointed to their congregation, we were told that is what God wants. And from the homes of families who sent their kids to Bible School or Sunday School lectures and threats were made to keep those Jews, Blacks and Women in their place all followed by an amen as they started their meal. And from dozens and dozens of state legislatures small minded, hate filled crusaders filled with vile and venom, passed laws prohibiting ALL Americans from attaining equality and civil rights.
We have witnessed the ignorant run rampant, the dumb multiply, the timid cower, the bully divide and conquer. We have seen the power of propaganda to dissuade, the hypocrisy of the church to debase, the liar debunk any truth. In the past year we have watched as more civil rights of Americans have been chiseled away and replaced with stringent, rules and regulations based only on bias and bigotry and oh yeah ALL in the name of God!
Where are the sane, the rational, the intelligent? Where are the people whose God is just? Where are the Americans who have had enough of divide and conquer?
Yeah, yeah, yeah its about the economy but one more Republican/Tea Party State Legislature has spent its time on destroying the lives of its own citizenry.
