During his homily, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re echoed Pope Francis’ call to “build bridges, not walls." During President Trump’s 2016 election campaign, when he promised to build a wall at the Mexican border, Pope Francis said, "A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not building bridges, is not Christian." Which kind of Christian was the Cardinal talking about? The MAGA Christian, where the more walls are built, the closer you believe you are to your God? The Trump kind of Christianity, as in the show and tell, and Heritage Foundation kind of Christian, where the more you hate, the closer you become to your God? Or the ALL-AMERICAN kind of Christian, where, as long as you define the other in negative terms, and scapegoat them with great ease, you believe you will become closer to your God, and of course, you will never be found out to be a fraud?
Where is the noise from the Christian leadership within America, who say they prefer bridges rather than walls? Where is the outrage, the LOUD, noise from the American Christian leadership as they watch not only the Trump wrecking ball come for the Constitution and Democracy, but also for their own religion. This is no time to turn the other cheek, because when you do, there will be no turning back!
