The Comstock Act , a 151-year-old law, was passed by Congress under the administration of Ulysses S. Grant and criminalized the act of using the U.S. Postal Service to send "obscene" materials such as contraceptives, substances that induce abortion, pornographic content, sex toys and any written material about these items. The distribution of information about birth control and abortion was banned under the Comstock Act.
