Othering is a phenomenon in which some individuals or groups are defined and labeled as not fitting in within the norms of a social group. It is an effect that influences how people perceive and treat those who are viewed as being part of the in-group versus those who are seen as being part of the out-group. (VERYWELL mind)
Othering is on top of the Trump political platform and seems to be the potion from which the cascade of “Brown Shirts,” Fascist leaning, Authoritarian loving anti-American loyalists to Trump, drink, bathe and inhale. One must, he or she, themselves first be insecure, afraid, and scared to death to be found a fraud to inhale Othering and drink it until becoming drunk.
On an individual level, othering plays a role in the formation of prejudices against people and groups. On a larger scale, it can also play a role in the dehumanization of entire groups of people which can then be exploited to drive changes in institutions, governments, and societies. (VERYWELL mind)
Wealthy Jews, wealthy Gays supporting this man who prefers Nazi’s, love homophobes, thinking that it must be the other Jews, the other Gays for which he loathes. People of color, pretending that the Puerto Ricans or the Haitians, who he calls garbage or who eat animals, are surely not the same. The Cuban Americans who think voting Republican, or having wealth makes their skin not the same color. Women, who somehow believe that it is “bad girls,” who asked to be raped, or whose brothers and fathers’ lust after. And the American Muslim population pretending that Trump’s Muslim ban was meant for the nasty Muslims not them.
